Day 3: Guimarães Ponte de Lima and Monção

Stop by Guimarães, considered to be the “cradle of Portugal”, as this was the headquarters of Afonso Henriques, Portugal’s first king. Visit its historical center, World Heritage site, and the Castle of Guimarães. Continue to the immaculately preserved Ponte de Lima, considered“the oldest town in Portugal

Visit Monção, separated from Galicia, Spain, by the River Minho, at the heart of Alvarinho wine area. Visit a local cellar to learn more about it and taste some wines produced here. Return to Porto.

Day 4: Bairrada and Aveiro

Departure to Bairrada wine region, a Portuguese DOC located close to the Atlantic Ocean. Bairrada is known for its deep colored tannic red wines that often have bell pepper and black currant flavors, as well as its emerging rosé production.

Visit a local wine producing estate and taste the local gastronomy, namely “leitão assado” (roasted suckling pig) with the local “espumante” (sparkling wine), a truly sensory experience.

Day 5: Dão - Viseu

Departure to Dão, DOC wine region, at the Center of Portugal. Surrounded by mountain chains, the Dão region is protected from cold winds, summer rain clouds from the Atlantic, and even continental storms. The vineyards lie high in the hills, at 400 to 500m, even sometimes as high as 800m, on decomposed schist or granite.

Visit Viseu and its compact old center around the hulking granite cathedral. Much of the town’s modern wealth comes from the excellent wines of the adjacent Dão region. Visit a local wine producing estate and taste the local gastronomy. Continue to the Douro Valley

Day 6: Douro Valley

Long famous as the source of Port wine, the Douro is now also renowned for its fine, rich unfortified wines of the highest quality, both red and white.

The traditional vineyard scenery, dominated by the old, narrow, stone-walled terraces, have been preserved in this region by World Heritage Site status. The Douro Valley is probably the last of the world’s major wine regions still to be pressing significant quantities of its grapes by foot – in shallow, open wine-fermenters, called “lagares”.

Appreciate breathtaking panoramas, along winding roads, and admire the beautiful “azulejos” depicting the wine harvest at Pinhão train station. Stop at a local “quinta” (wine producing estate) to learn about port-wine producing methods and enjoy a wine tasting.
