Jul 12, 2019Douro

The Douro is, without a doubt, a mandatory destination when visiting the North of Portugal. The vineyards, the Douro river meandering through the valleys, the wine tastings, the traditional gastronomy. These are the main reasons to visit the Douro region. To top it all, if you stay in a charming and comfortable hotel, where the surrounding landscape is one of the most beautiful in the world, what else can you ask for? A ride to take you there?! We’ll take care of that for you!

There is plenty to choose from when it comes to accommodation in the Douro valley. We decided to help you, by making a short list of our Top 5 Douro hotels. This list is based on 5 requirements we consider essential when choosing a hotel in the Douro

Start packing and get ready for an adventure in one of the most beautiful wine regions in the world.

Vila Galé Douro Vineyards – The scenery

The view. The breathtaking view. This is the main reason why we put the Vila Galé Douro Vineyards on this Top 5 Douro Hotels list. Located close to the Marmelal, a very picturesque village, the hotel is set not far from two stone markers that have an important role in the Douro wine history: these markers were built by order of Marquês de Pombal, in 1757, to demarcate the Douro fortified wines area. This is how the first demarcated wine region in the world was born.

The hotel has only 7 rooms. It is the perfect place to enjoy the calm and the silence, to sit back, relax and appreciate the unique views. The restaurant serves delicious traditional flavors and allows you to taste the Val Moreira wines.

Quinta de La Rosa – The location

Quinta de La Rosa is situated 1km away from Pinhão and is still a working vineyard and winery. Its location makes it the perfect place to stay if you want to wander through the vineyards but also walk to the village and appreciate the atmosphere.

There is a really interesting feature about Quinta de La Rosa: it is built on the side of a hill, with steep steps that connect the different levels of the hotel, much like the terraced vineyards that surround the property.

All the rooms have a river view. You can choose to stay at the hotel or at the Quinta house, a building with 100 years of history.

Let yourself be amazed by the landscape, the location and by the different activities Quinta de La Rosa has to offer. This is the perfect place for a romantic weekend or a week with friends/family – as you can occupy one of the Houses if you are a bigger group.

Quinta Nova – The wine

Award winning wines, delicate gastronomy, beautiful guestrooms, and the panoramic views are the 4 main reasons to visit and stay at Quinta Nova. They also justify its place on our Top 5 Douro Hotels list.

Mirabilis’ was awarded the 1st place on the Top 10 Portuguese Wines, for two years in a row. The winery’s description makes you want to have a glass, or two, of this ‘bright, citrus color’ wine. ‘The nose on this wine includes citrus fruits, vanilla, white spices and a note of mineral granite. Complex, intense, subtle and well balanced, its concentration and elegance make for a very serious wine’. We bet you can already see yourself sitting at the hotel’s terrace, enjoying the scenery while having a cold glass of wine!

The Quinta Nova Luxury Winery  House is a 19th-century manor house, with rooms with a panoramic view of the river and vineyard, decorated according to the period style. Wander through the gardens, enjoy a glass of wine at the terraces or go for a swim at the outside pool – stunning, by the way! There’s plenty to discover at Quinta Nova.

Morgadio da Calçada – The roots and traditions

Located in Provesende, Morgadio da Calçada is not only an accommodation, it is an experience in itself. This is a well-preserved village, with granite manors and a number of noble houses, taking you back in time to when the  Douro region started to be explored and wine producers started to settle in. Most historical buildings date back to the 17th and 18th centuries.

Staying at Morgadio da Calçada, one of the most ancient and important manors in the village, is like going back in time. The building is part of the region’s development and it still keeps its original features. The house has a very special feature, the ‘enfilade parlours’. Walk around the house, where you’ll see the original ceilings, the original interior colors and the period-style furniture.

Quinta da Pacheca Barrels – The uniqueness

Last, but not least, the Quinta da Pacheca Barrels are on our Top 5 Douro Hotels list because of its uniqueness. Can you imagine yourself in the  Douro region, sleeping in wine barrels with all the amenities of a hotel room?!

The Barrels are located in the rural landscape, giving you the opportunity of having a different experience in the Douro. Calm, relaxing and enhancing contact with the natural surroundings, the Barrels are one of the most creative features of the Quinta da Pacheca estate.

The Douro region has so much to explore. Depending on the season that you choose to visit the region there are different activities to take on, some more physical than others. If you want to learn more about the Douro region, there are a couple of articles on our blog that can be very helpful:
